Gleichenia presents "Shared Surface" at januka Gallery in Minami-Aoyama — a solo exhibition exploring how slight differences born from traces of hands and time come to share a single plane.
The title "Shared Surface" draws from the gallery itself: januka's large window opens the space to the street, allowing passersby to see the work from outside. The glass that separates interior from exterior becomes a shared surface — the same material that forms the WRIGHT objects on display within.
The exhibition centers on the WRIGHT collection, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's 1935 Fallingwater — a building that dissolved the boundary between interior and exterior. The WRIGHT objects are made from float glass — the same flat, transparent glass used in windows and architecture. Through cutting, polishing, and handling, a material normally designed to disappear becomes something with presence, and the boundary between inside and outside quietly dissolves.
The exhibition features glass objects and collage works by Kanako Ikegaya, inviting visitors to observe the process of transition between material and space. As Wright himself was deeply influenced by Japanese architecture and the concept of 間 (ma) — the meaningful space between things — these works bring his ideas full circle, from Japan through Wright and back to a Tokyo gallery.
